Brief Company History 1992 to 2024

The Company was set up in late 1992 by the current managing director David Kitching who had previously cut his career as a chartered civil engineer in the worlds of both consulting engineering and the specialist contracting. Realising there was a market out there for quality and reliability with a heavy flavour of expertise, the company started off providing remedial structural and foundation services.

The love of both new technologies and ancient buildings and structures lead us on to find and develop elegant and cost-effective methodologies for repairing and strengthening structures from listed heritage houses to modern constructions and bridges to roads and railways. The art is to find the simplest, most innovative and least disruptive method of achieving the goal.

The enthusiasm to be at the forefront of new applicable technology lead us on to use materials such as carbon fibre, stainless steel masonry reinforcement, geo co-polymers for ground strengthening and epoxy resins. When applied correctly these can all be used in both new and ancient structures to prolong their useful lives.

Dealing with structural problems in often historic and listed buildings and structures required us to increase our knowledge of conservation and we developed our Heritage Engineering Division staffed by a qualified conservation consultant and back by our technical staff of construction experts and materials engineers. This has lead us on to marry such things as carbon fibre to the Grade 1 listed Brighton Pavilion, and Northwood House on the Isle of Wight.

Having become a Helifix approved designer and installer back in the late 90’s STRESS is now their largest specialist contractor and their only masonry arch expert designing strengthening schemes for bridges and vaults.

Problem Solving provides us with endless satisfaction. We are proud to have the reputation in the industry for providing clever engineered solutions to a wide range of construction problems. This involves us in basement construction in London, to bridge strengthening in Yorkshire, culvert re-building in Lancashire and ground stabilisation and strengthening together with Heritage Engineering throughout the UK.

Our clients are wide and varied. We’ve carried out insurance related contracts from the start and work for most of the major loss adjusting practices. Having main-contractor-status and Gold Constructionline registration allows us to work for the majority of Tier 1 contractors. We solve problems for highways and local authorities and their term contractors, engineers and architects, The Crown Estate and other estate management companies.
